Katy Storie | Director of Sport, Newcastle University 

 

Katy is Director of Sport at Newcastle University with over 24 years of experience working within the Higher Education sport and physical activity and sport equality sector. 

 

Her role with The Safeguarding Alliance has evolved through establishing unique women’s leadership in sport skills development in MENA and her passion to create more opportunities for women & girls in sport that are safe, positive and inclusive.

 

She has significant partnership development experience, including key work in the Middle East establishing female sports collaborations in partnership with British Embassies, Ministries of Sport, National & International sporting organisations and Professional sports clubs.

 

Her sporting career began as Great Britain junior international weightlifter and then as an England Rugby Union player- winning 4 x Six Nations Championships, World Cup Silver and a stint as England A Captain.

 

Other key roles include:

  • Member of Board of Directors for British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS)

 

  • Council Member- elect for the Students Rugby Football Union - take up role in June 2024

 

  • First female Chair of the National Rugby Union Sport Advisory Group (BUCS)

 

  • Advisory Group member for the England Women’s Rugby Association 

 

  • Trustee and Chair at the England Students Rugby Football Union

 

  • Trustee of RISE (North East Active Partnership)

 

  • Senior Athlete Mentor for the Youth Sport Trust since 2009 – extensive schools based delivery, raising aspirations through sport learned life skills and developing other athlete mentors.
